Reading

At Landscore we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers. We believe reading is key for academic success and so to ensure we have a holistic approach to the teaching of reading, we implement the following.

  • Children take part in daily Guided Reading lessons, where children are exposed to a range of different texts and can demonstrate their understanding and thinking behind these.

  • We are very lucky to have a wide range of reading books in our school. All children from EYFS to Year 6 have a reading book to take home.

  • Children are read to each day by their class teacher. We have a ‘Reading Spine’ from which teachers can select books from, as well as sharing their own and children's choices.

  • Children are taught to read systematically using a DFE approved synthetic phonics approach of ‘Bug Club Phonics’. This is supported by phonetically decodable ‘Bug Club Books ‘. Once children have completed this program they move onto ‘Accelerated Reader’.

By the time children leave Landscore they will be competent readers who can recommend books to their peers, have a thirst for reading a range of genres including poetry, and participate in discussions about books, including evaluating an author’s use of language and the impact this can have on the reader

Phonics

We use the 'Bug Club Phonics' systematic synthetics phonics programme. It is introduced in EYFS and continued throughout the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. It focuses on phoneme / grapheme recognition and the strategies of blending to read and segmenting to spell. Pupils in KS1 receive daily focussed teaching sessions.

KS1 Reading Books

In KS1 we also use the ‘Bug Club’ reading scheme at our core, supplemented with a range of books from commercially produced schemes and other quality texts. The reading scheme gives children the opportunity to practise their developing reading skills with texts which are phonetically decodable and have appropriate vocabulary and sentence structure.

KS2 Reading Books

As children complete the 'Bug Club' books and become fluent readers they move onto 'Accelerated Reader' which ensures children read books at the appropriate level and supports the development of their comprehension skills through quizzes after each book they have read. We are lucky to have an extensive range of books in our school library that children can select at their own 'AR level'.

Landscore Reading Spine

Every class has a shared book which teachers read to the class. We have carefully chosen our reading spine books to expose children to books they may not be able to access independently allowing us to explore new vocabulary with them as we read. The reading spine books also make links to our 'Themes' and look to introduce children to book series they can continue independently.
