Year 1 Phonics week bg 1.3.21

This week our focus sound is the long and short 'oo'. We are going to explore the different ways that you can spell this sound - the different graphemes.

It might feel a little bit tricky and confusing this week because sometimes the letters can make different sounds in different words. TOP TIP: try sounding out words using both ways to say the sound and think about which one sounds right? For example 'blue' - 'b'/'l' /'oo' and 'b'/'l'/ 'yoo'.

Monday 1st March - long 'oo' sound written as 'ew'

• First, watch this short clip.

• Then have a go at reading real and alien words in the Dragon's Den game. Click on phase 5 and click on the 'ew' box.

• Then have a go at writing some words which contain the 'ew' spelling. Ask a grown up to say the word and you have a go at spelling it. Remember - this grapheme can make 2 different sounds. Click here for a list of words.
